Abstract

No Space For This Time

Franck Ancel

I wrote a first text for ISEA in 2006 about the context of the World Exhibition for Shanghai (1). It is an urbanisation process, emerging in an endless & unmilited city that is being discussed for 2010. Consequently, what is being prepared at Shanghai is not simply an immaterial bridge between a universal-type event and a planetary dimension. It's much more similar with the contemporary transmissions dedicated to the electronic arts, as at the forthcoming ISEA gathering. Some of these planned interactions between planetary evolution and current techno-scientific developments constitute the borders of artistic creations. For ISEA 2008 in Singapor we imagine now some real projections & propositions for the World Exhibition in Shanghai through a Mobile Wireless Digitale vision. It will be a setting for utopian realities. They will take form thanks to technologies and existing projects. The purpose is not to present a performance or an exhibition but to assert a new vision with remove the current borders existing in the World. Our research questions « SPIME » (Space-Time cf. Bruce Sterling (2)) connections: from reality limits to invisible data for no space « rendez-vous ». As we said, we do not propose to add projects. We only use them to imagine and create another way of thinking data transmissions. If physical networks & data processing exist in unlimited space, what are those new temporal limits and how can we make them visible for Shanghai 2010?
